About.
Established in 1939
Originally known as Northside School or the North West School, Russell Elementary School was built in 1939 in response to the population growth in Kalispell during the Depression. The original building had six classrooms, offices, and a basement playground. It was designed by Kalispell architect Fred Brinkman, who gave the building an Art Moderne-style. In January of 1940, the school was renamed Russell School in honor of Montana's cowboy artist, Charles M. Russell. The Kalispell Times commented that Russell was "a colorful figure with a great love of nature and the ability to sketch and paint the things he saw and loved, and the man who had preserved in colorful picture the story of early Montana and the West."
